Floating elbow eMedicine Orthopedics

The term floating elbow was first introduced by Stanitski and Micheli to describe an injury pattern in children involving concomitant fractures of the forearm axis and supracondylar humerus in the same extremity. This description has been extended to adult patients who sustain ipsilateral fractures of the humerus and forearm.
