Ainhum: Definition(s) via UMLS "Spontaneous autoamputation of the fourth or fifth toe."
Ainhum eMedicine
Ainhum is the autoamputation of a digit, usually of the fifth toe bilaterally and as a result of a constricting scar in the form of a band or groove. Pseudoainhum is a similar condition that occurs as a secondary event resulting from certain hereditary and nonhereditary diseases that lead to annular constriction of digits.
Ainhum predominantly affects black patients in tropical regions. Although it has been reported in temperate areas, ainhum appears to be increasingly less common in the United States.
Ainum MedPix
Ainhum involving the fifth toe of a 45 year old Mukongo man in Zaire. The constricting sulcus and the bulbous distal portion of the toe are seen, as well as medial rotation of the plantar surface of the toe. The toenail is on the lateral surface.
Ainum OMIM
A narrow strip of hardened skin, a constricting ring, forms on the little toe at the level of the digitoplantar fold and progresses to spontaneous amputation of the digit. Familial occurrence has been noted by Maass (1926) and by DaSilva Lima (1880). Simon (1921) reported ainhum in father and 2 sons. Ainhum-like constriction bands occur with neurogenic acroosteolysis (201300) and with mutilating keratoderma
